A pergola is the part of the house that gets used most and looked at least, right up until a post moves, a beam sags or the whole thing starts groaning in the wind. Most of what we see is repairable — rot at the base of a post, a failed bracket, split rafters, sun-bleached timber that just needs stripping back and re-oiling — and repairing costs a fraction of replacing. Where a structure genuinely is past saving, we will tell you that plainly instead of quoting a repair we do not believe in. Posts & Footings
Nearly every pergola failure starts at the bottom, not the top. Timber posts set into or near the ground hold moisture, and rot works upward from the footing where nobody is looking until the post can be rocked by hand. We check every post at its base before quoting anything above it, because replacing a beam on a rotten post is money thrown away. Where a post has to come out, the replacement goes back on a proper stirrup or bracket so the timber sits clear of the ground and the same failure does not repeat.
Beams, Rafters & Brackets
Sagging is the complaint we hear most, and it is usually a bracket or a fixing rather than the beam itself. Galvanised brackets near the coast give up quietly, bolts loosen as timber shrinks and swells through the seasons, and a span that was borderline on day one starts to show it after a decade. We re-fix, re-bolt, sister in new timber where a rafter has split, and replace corroded hardware with stainless or hot-dip galvanised so the repair outlasts the last one.
Storm Damage
Pergolas and shade structures are among the first things a summer storm cell takes, and they often come down onto something else. We handle storm damage repairs across the coast, including make-safe work quickly and the full repair after, with photos and a written scope if you are lodging an insurance claim. Cleaning, Oiling & Recoating
A structurally sound pergola that simply looks tired is the cheapest job on this page. Stripping back grey, UV-damaged timber and recoating it with a proper exterior oil or stain brings the colour back and slows the next few years of weathering. We do this as a standalone job or as part of a maintenance visit, and we will say up front if the timber is too far gone for a coating to be worth the money.
